Daily activities to keep your pupils active during Sustrans Big Pedal and beyond. Includes ideas for making Big Pedal active journeys even more engaging. Plus physical activities that can be completed at home or school.
For Pupils taking part in the 1-day challenge, children with barriers to participation and remote learners, these physical activities count towards your school's total in the Big Pedal challenge. Physical activities should be at least 30 minutes long to count in the Big Pedal challenge (with exceptions made for children with special educational needs and disabilities). Remember to log these physical activities as 'Children's physical activities' (for the 1-day challenge, children with barriers to participation and remote learners only).
Children's active journeys get logged as 'Child journeys' based on the mode of transport used.
Day 1 Amazing Active Travel
Kick off Big Pedal with Bike It Pat’s Mini bike skills guide. Or encourage your pupils to explore their local area and make some fantastic art with leaves and bark on their active journeys.
Day 2 Amazing Active Journeys For Everyone
We want all of your pupils to get active, whether they have access to a bike or not. Share Bike It Pat’s Wheels, skills and drills video which contains options with and without a bike. Or work on your pupil’s flexibility with these five stretching circuit activities from Complete P.E and Youth Sports Trust. Help pupils experience an active journey in a new way by going on a sound scavenger hunt in their local area.
Day 3 Amazing Air
On Amazing Air Day Bike It Pat shows you how to conduct a clean air route experiment on an active journey. Or get pupils physically active with this Movement chain activity- how many moves will they be able to remember?
Day 4 Your Amazing Imagination (Earth Day)
We don’t want to take any chances with our planet’s future. But why not let your pupils leave the route of their journey to chance with the penny walk activity? We hope they enjoy travelling actively in their local area, whichever way they go. Use Bike It Pat’s active cyclist stretching activities video and/or Twinkl’s yoga poses pdf to work on your pupil’s flexibility.
Day 5 Amazingly Mindful Travel
Make your pupils’ active journeys more mindful by encouraging them to tune into their local area using their five senses with our Amazingly Mindful journeys activity. Laughter and exercise are both important for mental health- can anyone in the class keep a straight face whilst working out with Bananaman? And for those pupils who find their inner zen working up a sweat and getting their heart pumping, there is a Heart Healthy workout from Complete P.E. and Youth Sports Trust.
Day 6 Amazingly Creative
Ask the class to be creative and take on the role of a scavenger, a heart detective or obstacle course designer in today’s activities. Ask pupils to search their local area to find everything on our active scavenger list. Or to be a heart detective and investigate what activity makes their heart beat the fastest. Pupils can also use their creativity to design their own obstacle course.
Day 7 Amazing Global Journeys
Ok, we can’t take your pupils around the world. But we can encourage them to get out exploring their local areas. Encourage them to put a bit of fun into every step of their journey with our Swagger up your style walking activity. Set a mission for your pupils with the Step up challenge- what landmark can they reach? No steps? No problem! Challenge your pupils with the stand up and sit down challenge.
Day 8 Your Amazing journey
How well do your pupil’s know their local area? Can they take an active journey that allows them to spot something starting with every letter of the alphabet? And encourage pupils to test their underarm ball skills with these throwing and ball rolling activities from Complete P.E. and Youth Sports Trust.
Day 9 Amazing Interventions
Today our active journey focus is on scooters with a Scooter skills lucky dip activity. Share this handy Scooter safety L-check with parents and guardians. For pupils ready for more advanced scooting challenges, share the Learn how to bunny hop and Learn how to scoot backwards videos (links in pdfs). Get all pupils moving with the two activities from Complete P.E and Youth Sports trust- use a dice to create a movement sequence or a space-themed sound track to take pupils on a space adventure.
Day 10 Amazing Possibilities
Encourage your pupils to reflect on their Big Pedal achievements and what physical activities they enjoyed most. Our Lichen detective activity will help pupils learn more about lichens, what they tell us about air quality and why continuing to choose active travel is so important. It might be the last day of Sustrans Big Pedal 2021, but we want your pupils to keep moving until the very end (and beyond!). These resources from Complete P.E. and Youth Sports Trust will get pupils moving like an animal and moving to the beat.
