Cycle, walk and scoot to school — learn, explore and get active
1,308 schools registered
413,467 pupils taking part
Sustrans Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking and scooting challenge supporting pupils, staff and parents to choose human power for their journey to school.
Come and join us to help make our tenth Big Pedal the biggest and best challenge yet.
Sustrans Big Pedal will run for 10 days from 22 April to 5 May 2020 and is open to all primary and secondary schools in the UK, including SEN schools.
What is the challenge?
On each day of the challenge, schools compete to see who can get the highest percentage of their pupils, staff and parents cycling, walking or scooting to school. Your school’s best five days will determine your final position, but you can log journeys on all ten days if you wish.
We know that many of you would like to see safer and more enjoyable routes to school and we want decision makers to hear this. During the challenge, we’ll ask you about the changes that you and your pupils want to see to make it easier to cycle, walk and scoot.
We provide a suite of fun and interactive resources to help make your challenge a success. These free resources include:
- A school account on the Big Pedal website
- A wallchart on the Human Body with curriculum-based fact cards, register early to receive a free paper copy in the post
- Top Tips
To celebrate the finale of the challenge there is also the option to join our superhero fundraiser day. All money raised will help us to enable thousands of children to walk, cycle or scoot every day – making the school run safer and healthier.
Daily prize draws
Schools will be entered into a daily prize draw for rewards including equipment and accessories if over 15% of your school community cycle, walk or scoot on that day of the challenge.
